Community Process- ASHA Programme

ASHA Programme was launched in 2005-06 at grass root level under the umbrella of all health Programme of National Health Mission, a central Government Scheme. The main programmatic components include Health System Strengthening in rural areas- Reproductive, Maternal, Neonatal-Child and Adolescent Health and Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases. The NHM envisages achievement of universal access to equitable, affordable & quality health care services that are accountable and responsive to people's needs.

  One of the key components of the National Health Mission is to provide every village in the country with a trained female community health activist ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist), selected from the village itself and accountable to it, the ASHA will be trained to work as an interface between the community and the public health system.

Following are the key components of ASHA:

  • ASHA will be chosen through a rigorous process of selection involving various community groups, Aaganwadi, ANM, the Block Nodal officer, District Nodal officer, the village Health Committee and the Gram Sabha.
  • She is an important link between the health care system and community to create awareness in different health issue and mobilize the community members to access the health care and help in reducing the MMR and IMR.
  • ASHAs are doing 6 or 7 HBNC (Home Based Neo Natal Care) visit regularly basis.
  • The ASHAs will receive performance-based incentives for different activities..
  • Monthly meetings at block/District level and quarterly meeting at State level are organized for support and evaluation of ASHA.
  • Along with this ASHA and ASHA facilitator get uniform (Sari), diary and HBNC formats every year.
  • ASHA, ASHA facilitators, DCM and BC have benefitted with the CUG connection from State.
  • All the ASHA and ASHA facilitators have advantage of 2 Lakh accidental insurance.
  • State Government proposed a scheme for ASHAs according to their educational qualification they will be benefitted of 15 % wattage in the third class employment in health department and those ASHAs who have been passed 12 class examinations, will be benefitted of 15 % wattage in written examination of ANM and GNM.
